Since bursting onto the college scene four long years ago (Oh. Oh my.) I realized one of the best things to do during my down time in between classes, provided all of my work was done of course, was sit around and play FIFA on Xbox. The game really started taking on a following about four years ago, and today it’s one of the most popular games in the world. It makes sense, given that soccer is far and away the world’s most popular sport, except here in Uncle Sam’s house. But that may soon change.
Soccer in America has seen an immense spike in popularity ever since the game started gaining steam. It allows for some of the more uneducated soccer fans to learn more about the teams around the world, that feature some of the best athletes in the world. The actual gameplay itself helps people understand the rules of the game, as well as even some strategic moves on how to win. This way, it makes watching actual soccer on television that much more enthralling, because you know what’s going on.
Also, since the sport is so huge around the world, the best soccer isn’t in America. So, it’s kind of cool watching someone else dominate something. I mean, truthfully, watching the men’s basketball team absolutely curb-stomp the competition is awesome, but it’s also completely predictable. It takes out the suspense and drama that make sports so great.
The World Cup is always a big deal, but in recent years, their television ratings have soared and continue to do so. 17 million Americans tuned in to watch the beginning of the women’s World Cup final, with the number grew to 21.86 million an hour later, and at its peak 22.86 million at 8:30 p.m. ET, according to preliminary data from industry website TV Media Insights. The numbers absolutely smashed records.
Soccer is well on its way to becoming huge in America, especially with a lot of stud European players actually wanting to come play in the MLS, albeit if they are a little “seasoned.” I mean the only team in all of sports that my house (and there’s a lot of us) is Tottenham Hotspur. (#COYS) Seriously look up Harry Kane highlights and try to tell me that that man is not an absolute stud. I’m not saying soccer will become the “new fourth sport” and replace hockey, I’m saying it will simply become the fifth sport, held in the same regard as the other four.
It isn’t something that is going to happen over night, because life is not a sprint; it’s a marathon, but the fact that soccer in America has even reached the level that it's currently on can be traced back to the rise in popularity of the video game FIFA. College kids may be lazy at times, but in this laziness they have slowly started a revolution weather they know it or not. Side note, if you’ve never played FIFA as a drinking game, you’re missing out. Soccer is here to stay, so pick up the sticks and see what you got.
