For many college students, Spring Break is now approaching or perhaps coming to an end. While college life is filled with many happy moments and wonderful experiences, going home and taking a break after a few months of all-nighters and stress is commonly a huge wave of relief.
My wave of relief hit me, particularly strongly might I add, when I saw the New York City skyline — because it meant that I was finally home.
Driving on the highway, I saw it in the distance and immediately felt my heart and everything inside me light up.
While I have seen the New York City skyline thousands of times because I grew up in Brooklyn, there is never a time where I see all of those skyscrapers, lights, people and opportunities without feeling something special inside of me.
This might sound cliché, but there is just something about New York. Even though the constant number of people around me or the perhaps “rude” nature of drivers might be overwhelming, I will always think of New York as my home. There is simply no place like it.
When I see the skyline, I realize how lucky I am to be standing so close to a city that people all over the world are dreaming of. The skyline can mean so many different things to so many different people, but when I see it, I feel hope. I feel excited about all of the possibilities that the world has to offer.
I feel so small when I look at the New York City skyline in the best way possible. I feel as though the world is filled with endless opportunities and that there are so many people out there for me to meet.
If I am ever going through a difficult time, I will always try to go to the Brooklyn Heights promenade at night and just walk as I face the skyline. I almost always feel better.
I know New York might not be for everyone, but I feel so lucky to be able to call it my home. Even though it is constantly changing and expanding (even Brooklyn has skyscrapers now!), there is something timeless about it.
No matter how many times I see the New York City skyline, it just never gets old. It represents hope, possibility and beauty/innovation. It shows that there are so many stories happening around you every day and is a reminder of the endless opportunities that are out there. The New York City skyline always gives me a reason to feel special and to have hope.
