How Disney Movies Prepared You For College

We know more than we think.

They say nothing prepares you for the freedom and change that college brings, but I think that we are more prepared than we think. As I approach my senior year, I have realized that the lessons we have carried with us from our favorite Disney movies have proven to be more than transferable to the "college world." Here is an ode to the movies that we grew up with and still look to today.

"Finding Nemo"

When we arrive as freshmen, we are eager to see just how far we can go. We are full of curiosity and the desire to swim into unfamiliar waters. Exploring is good for the soul, but don’t be afraid to swim back home every once in awhile.

"The Little Mermaid"

Find your voice and never lose sight of its importance. Starting college can be intimidating, but it is a time for intellectual and emotional growth. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about topics you don’t understand or be the person who initiates a conversation with someone new.

"Beauty and the Beast"

Don’t let your first impression of someone be your only impression. College is a time of constant evolution. Never judge someone too harshly because they may end up surprising you in the best way.

"Winnie the Pooh"

Snacks. Need I say more? No one ever got through writing a paper at 3 a.m. or studying during finals week without some fun food. “Treat yo self,” but don’t forget to eat some of the green things too (your body will thank you for it).

"Monsters Inc."

There is a never ending line of doors before us. Push yourself to walk through new ones, but also know when it’s time to put certain doors through the shredder.

"Alice in Wonderland"

At some point we all hit the college slump. It’s perfectly normal to feel like you’ve lost motivation and just want to dream beneath the trees, but don’t spend too much time down the rabbit hole.

"Toy Story"

If a sheriff and a space ranger can wind up being friends, then what’s stopping you from branching out? You might find your best friend in someone who is nothing like you on the outside, but your soul mate on the inside.

"Inside Out"

Sometimes you’re on top of the world and sometimes you will break down as the world crumbles beneath you. Don’t be so hard on yourself. I’ll tell you a secret. A “C” on a paper won’t kill you, and everybody feels lost from time to time.

"Peter Pan"

This one comes into play around your senior year (I know this because my senior year is around the corner). You spend most of your life wishing that you could grow up faster until you’re actually on the brink of becoming a “real person.” It’s okay to miss your childhood, but don’t let it stop you from getting excited about the next phase. Even Neverland loses its spark when you stay too long.

"Up"

Spend less of your life worrying about the destination and enjoy the journey. Four years come and go faster than you think. Fill your time with the things that will fill your heart.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
