Watching the Grammy's this past Sunday was more emotional than as usual. I mostly watch award shows for the music cause it's what I love. Yes, I was looking forward to Beyonce and Adele but all eyes were on the artist of the night, Chance The Rapper. Now a lot of you may not know who this is but you've been hearing it all week because he has gained success by breaking all the rules when it comes to music. So here's a rundown of how Chance The Rapper is music's M.V.P
1) He's a Independent Artist
Being such a huge star, you'd assumed he'd be signed to major label like Sony, Columbia Records, or Def Jam. But he choses to produce his music as an independent artist than be controlled by label execs or be in a money stealing contract like other artists.
2) Free Music
All of his music comes from mixtapes and not albums. He only releases his music through streaming platforms like Spotify and Apple Music. A different approach than other artists wanting to make a profit from their songs. He says he does it to let his fans listen to music instead of having to buy it.
3) He still makes so much money
Now how would an artist make money without selling his music. Well he has a good marketing team behind him. He makes a huge profit on touring around the globe, merchandise sold, and appearences like on Saturday Night Live and The Grammy's.
4) He earned three Grammy's in one night
The Grammy's changed their rules this year and allowed streaming artists to be considered for nominations. Chance was nominated for seven awards and took home three of the most important in his catagory. Best New Artist, Best Rap Performance, and Best Rap Album. For an indepentdant artist, it's a big deal to even be nominated for a Grammy. Especially when you beat out contenders such as Drake, Kanye West, and DJ Khaled.
5) He puts God first
If you watched t Grammy's that night, you saw Chance preach as he accepted his award for Best New Artist. He thanked God for blessing him with his family, his hometown of Chicago, and his ability to bring music into the world. Even when they were playing the "speech ending" music, it only had more epic volumes during his speech and claimed his award in the name of the Lord. His exact words guys. And it didn't end there because later in the show, he took the whole building to church during his performance with Kirk Franklin, Tamela Mann, and a full church choir.
So if you want to go and give Chance The Rapper, you can see him in concert this spring because he's going on a North American Tour this spring. And I'd probably jump on Ticketmaster cause half the cities are already sold out.
