I was lucky enough to land a full-time job before I graduated in May at the marketing group where I interned last summer. I was excited to be back with the team and doing something I really enjoy, but I didn't realize how different my summer was going to be compared to others in the past. And don't forget I'm still working my part-time job scooping ice cream on the weekends - yes, I know I'm crazy.
I find myself on a completely different schedule, and not just because I'm not in college anymore. My work hours are 8:30-3:30 Monday through Friday, which isn't bad at all, but I've realized how much I appreciate the weekends more. If I have to run errands, I now can't go during the week, and I have to plan out my Saturday morning where I consider waking up at 8:30 a.m. as sleeping in.
By Friday night, I'm exhausted and want to do nothing but stay in and watch shows that have piled up in my DVR from the week. Most nights during the week, I'm in bed by 9:30 p.m., but that could be because I'm not a morning person so I want to get as much sleep as possible.
But I often find myself working both jobs on Friday nights, meaning a 12-hour day. Weekend nights in July and August are the busiest for ice cream, so it's safe to say I crash as soon as I get home after 10 p.m. (some nights the crash hits at 9 p.m.). However, it's nice to eat my feelings after a long work week.
Meanwhile, weather in New England is starting to hit 90 degrees and the humidity is disgusting. I try my best to coordinate my work outfits with the weather, but there's only so much business casual that can work with this heat. But I also can't forget to keep a sweater at my desk because I'll get cold from the air conditioning. It's a struggle.
As much as this has been an adjustment, I know I should be grateful that I have two jobs, especially a full-time one. I know I wouldn't be able to enjoy my summer as much if I was still searching and applying for jobs and wondering if I'll ever hear back. That was stressful enough during school before graduation. But for those still looking, your time will come. Just don't forget to have a little fun this summer, too.
So for the time being, I don't mind going to bed early and watching "Jeopardy!" at 7 p.m. like a grandma. I try to make plans with friends for the weekends so I can get out of the house and enjoy my summer before it's over. Make the best of what's available, work hard and don't forget some me time is a good way to rewind from the day.
