Adopting a pet is always a happy occasion for the family, and when you pick the right animal it is the best decision yet. In college, having a pet can be difficult and most of the time you are only allowed a pet goldfish in your dorm. Don't get me wrong; goldfish are cute, but you can't cuddle them and sometimes you just want a cuddle buddy. So when you move into your first apartment off campus, it is an awesome opportunity to finally have a pet friend. I recently adopted a cat to keep me company at college for this coming fall. The best part of it is that I won't come home alone anymore.
Many college students have felt at one time or another that they were all alone in the world. Or that they were severely homesick and could use some comfort. Of course everyone experiences this at one point or another. The solution for some is to go out and spend all hours of the day at work, school or with friends. I spent so much time with my friends, but it is difficult when I got tired of them or they get tired of me. So the thought always came to mind to have a furry creature run around my apartment, making it lively and more inviting for me.
At the beginning of the summer I made the decision to adopt my cat from the Humane Society. It was an interesting experience all on its own. Most of the animals there have really sad pasts and need extra love. Some just had to be given up because their owners couldn't afford them or they didn't want them anymore. Senior animals were free and all the adoption paper work was already paid for since many people are looking for a young spry animal to take home. It is always better to adopt rather than buy. Those animals are in need of the love you can give them, and they have some really interesting personalities all on their own.
Speaking of personalities, the cat I chose to adopt was named Grace Slick and I could see why: she has markings around her eyes that make it look like she is wearing eye liner. Of course when I went to meet her she was a bit stand-offish and I can understand why. Her story was that she was given up with two other kittens (Janis Joplin and Bob Dylan). They were both adopted together and she was left with 10 cats in a room. The someone decided to adopt her then never showed up to pick her up, and when I picked her up she was so cuddly. I know you are probably thinking that cats are never cuddly; well, this little one is and she comes up to you to nuzzle you. I changed her name to Molly Ringwald after my favorite actress, and slowly she has stolen the hearts of many. She was the best decision I have made yet.
So when you are looking for your new best friend, think about going to the Humane Society and saving a life. Adopt; don't buy.
