I'll admit, I don't want to, but I have to. I binged-watched House of Cards latest season in a day and a half. I blame Netflix for providing every episode of the season all at once. Yes, my love for shows like Law and Order: SVU and Big Brother are very strong, but I've determined that HoC *may be* the best show out currently (and maybe one of the best of all time.) Here is just a few reasons of why it is so good and should binge-watch it if you haven't already.
1. Kevin Spacey. Robin Wright. Michael Kelly.
If these people can't get you excited over a film, TV series or play, then I don't know what will. If you're curious about who these people are, please go to Google. You've seen AT LEAST one production with them in it. (There are many more great actors, trust me.)
2. But Lauren, what makes it so good?
A conniving couple climb their way to the top of the political ladder using manipulation and just plain evilness to get there. Well, they do it together, but Congressman Frank Underwood is the actual politician with his wife, Claire beside him.
To say the least, Frank Underwood is not a good man. Yes, he lies, orchestrates many of the problems presnted, kills (figuratively and literally), but it's done with such charm and warmth. It's how he makes his way to the top look so effortlessly. He begins his journey in season 1 as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from a South Carolina district and Majority Whip of the U.S. House of Representatives. I'm not one for spoilers, but by the end of season 2, he's inaugurated as president.
While this may sound ridiculous, it turns everything political into a savvy and compelling series. It's not just political either as we see many relationship struggles, personal vendettas being carried out and investigate journalism at its finest. This cast really brings the talent to the produced and directed series by Beau Willimon. It's an adaption of BBC mini-series of the same name by Michael Dobbs. So let me take a minute to thank the British for One Direction, Prince Harry, fish and chips and *technically* HoC.
3. Does everyone love it or just you?
No, mostly everyone! It has a score of 9/10 on IMDb, a 76% on Metacritic, and a 84% on Rotten Tomatoes. There are still haters of the show, but for the most part it has received generally positive reviews for each seasons. It's also won many awards for both writing and acting, like Golden Globes and Emmy's, where it was the first original, online series to to receive major Emmy nominations.
It's totally not for everyone, but if you like a good drama-filled political, but also just in general, good show, House of Cards may be for you. It's currently streaming its 4 seasons on Netflix.
