As I was procrastinating writing a paper and deciding to scroll down my Twitter feed instead, I came across a picture of a potato that had the question "Prom?" written across it. Now, while I thought this was a tweet from one of my sisters friends since prom season is right around the corner, I was very wrong.
The picture came from an account called "Mystery Potato" that shows multiple pictures and tweets including a potato with a sharpie-written message across it. I usually come across many dumb accounts on Twitter and thought this was just another parody account, but once again, I was wrong. Messages written on these potatoes are actually sent to real life people. Along with the Twitter account, there is a website, Mysterypotato.com, that allows people to buy and personalize a potato and anonymously send it to anyone of your choosing. People have recently received them as legitimate gifts for Christmas and even Valentines day.
I wish someone would call me a hot potato.
What better way to say "I love you" than written on a potato?
The site allows you to choose your own personalized message and even which potato you would like to send; how thoughtful, right? The messages are hand written and sent to whichever lovely friend you choose to send your potato to. Mystery Potato also provides bundles such as "The Ex-Revenge Sac of Potatoes".
The bundle includes a sack of potatoes with messages that include anything terrible you'd like written to your ex-girlfriend and/or boyfriend. I don't know about you, but if I were trying to get revenge on my ex-boyfriend, sending a sac of potatoes wouldn't be my first choice, but hey, that's just me.
Don't worry, the fun doesn't stop at sending a revenge package. Ever heard of seeing a black cat as bad luck? Well, Mystery Potato stepped their bad luck up a notch by including a bundle of 13 black, unlucky potatoes. Yes, unlucky potatoes. Surprisingly, these potatoes are becoming very popular. As seen from Twitter, people all over the country have been sending these potatoes to people and receiving them from people as well. Who knew creating an anonymous potato company could be such a big hit?
Included on their site is also a blog that contains ways you can cook your edible, mystery gifts. That sounds like a win-win situation to me. A nice random message along with a home cooked meal, don't mind if I do! Don't believe me? Check them out at http://mysterypotato.com, maybe you'll get a good laugh out of it like I did.
If you thought I was kidding... Well, I really wish I was.
