At the beginning of the year, rumors began to loom about the collapse of Hip Hop artist Hopsin's label Funkvolume. As 2016 unfolded, it became clear that Funkvolume was, in fact, dead, becoming officially defunct on January 7.
Hopsin is notorious in the industry for his blunt lyrics and gut-wrenching beats. Hopsin founded the label with Damian Ritter in 2009, and the label included other artists such as Dizzy Wright, Jarren Benton, and SwizZz. Just three weeks ago, he released the "Ill Mind of Hopsin 8" video, where he tore apart his now-depleted label. The video has already reached over 8 million views, leaving his fans wondering what went down between himself and the Funkvolume team.
So, what exactly happened?
A lot can be speculated just from the lyrics of "Ill Mind of Hopsin 8," as Hopsin made sure his voice was heard on the subject. He opened the track with "Homie, I made you rich, paid your rent," and goes on to say, "Something fishy 'bout you, Mr. D Ritter." As the video progressed, it became clear that Hopsin and Ritter's relationship became completely volatile, and it was evident that the relationship would never be reconciled.
Money being the root of all evil, Ritter became greedy and was keeping things from the team, so Hopsin wasn't getting the cut that he deserved. Hopsin is known as the face of Funkvolume, yet the checks that he was receiving didn't reflect this.
Hopsin was fed up, and when he called Ritter out on his speculations, he got nowhere, and ultimately making it Hopsins' only choice to end the label. Shouting out at the end of his final verse, "Good luck Jarren, Dizzy, Hoppa, SwizZz, I'm going solo," he made maybe the boldest move of his carrier, to completely drop the label and crew that he came up with.
This lit a fire under Hopsin to create a new label, Undercover Prodigy. On top of this, he launched a new tour, entitled the "Hop Solo" tour. Hopsin isn't backing down, and to be completely honest, Ritter made a huge mistake by crossing Hopsin. Hopsin has a devoted fan base that's willing to follow him anywhere he goes.
Funkvolume was once a platform that Hopsin and his fans advocated for, but now that platform is dead as Undercover Prodigy rises, becoming the new empire. Watch out, because Hopsin has a new reign coming through, and he is taking names.
