When I was seven years old, I had massive dreams for the future. I imagined there would be flying cars, robot, daily trips to Mars, and the world would resemble something out of The Jetsons. My 7 year old sister has similar dreams. She imagines herself being a famous Youtuber and hopes life will mimic the world of the Disney show Bazaardvark, where your principal is a robot and technology drives your everyday life.
With the current state of the world, my dreams for her future have changed.
I now hope the future will consist of more love. Currently, love is missing from everything we do. It no longer drives our motivations in life. We have moved from wanting to be a certain occupation because of our love for it, to wanting to be that occupation for a paycheck. Love takes time. It needs an environment to flourish in, and that's not the world right now. Love is missing from our politics, religion, language and more.
But love cannot exist without unity. Currently the world is divided along issues that shouldn't be argued against. We shouldn't argue about whether black lives matter or not, because it's common sense that they do. It's sad to say, but not everyone has common sense. That brings me to my next point.
I hope the people of the future are more intelligent. No, I don't mean possessing the ability to do long division instantly, but rather the ability to see our differences and use them as learning points in society. Currently our society cannot see. We have so many individuals who are "colorblind" or turn a blind eye to issues that they need to know about. And so, I hope people are smart enough to see past the hate that divides us.
I hope the future has less fear. Because every day, too many young black and Latino children walk out of their doors afraid. They're not afraid of their neighborhood, they're afraid of the very people who are supposed to drive the fear away. I hope children can return to being children, to play in the streets as Cops and Robbers and not fear the cops because you vaguely match the description of a robber.
Lastly, I hope the future has more celebration. We live in a negative world, where people are not congratulated for the good that they have done, but rather, the few mistakes they made along the way. Our children need to hear "congratulations" more often instead of "I expected more."
I don't want the future to be more technologically advanced. I want the future to be a place where Tamir Rice, Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, and my sister, nieces, and nephews can run free. Where they are loved, united with their community, are embraced for their intelligence and do not know the word fear. Those are my hopes for the future.
