I remember the first time I ever met Hunter Hutchinson. He photo-bombed a picture of me and two of my other guy friends (who ended up becoming his roommates) at the mixer we had with Delt our freshman year. Then, a few weeks later I was at our study hours at the Tri-Delt lodge and I saw one of the girls in my pledge class watching him on YouTube. So of course I went over and watched it too. After watching a home video of him singing Blake Shelton & playing the guitar I thought to myself, “Good thing I have a picture with this kid, he’s going to be famous someday.” And to this day, my thoughts haven’t changed.
Aaron Watson is a Texas country music singer. He was born and raised in Abilene where he attended Abilene Christian University. In 2004, he released his album "The Honky Tonk Kid," and acquired his nickname. Personally, my favorite song is "Barbed Wire Halo," but he is known for many more. His most recent album "The Underdog" was released Feb. 17, 2015.
“I met Aaron back in 2008,” Hutchinson said. “It was six months after I had lost my dad to cancer at the age of 14. They did a charity golf tournament for him where Aaron worked one of the holes and I got to be apart of it. From then on he just put his arm around me and took me under his wing. We’ve been very close ever since.”
Aaron has served as Hunter’s mentor and friend. Hunter said he helps him with everything, from recording to writing, to just reminding him to do things. “He has helped me evolve my music from just a song to their highest potential,” he said. “He really has an awesome way of just making a song hit you. He has also helped me with my timing and singing. There’s a lot more that goes into it than I originally thought.”
As a friend, Aaron has done so much as well. Hunter said some of his favorite memories are hanging out with him and his family around the ranch. His little boys Jack and Jake Watson enjoy hunting and riding four wheelers with Hunter. Sometimes at the ranch they’ll even pick up their guitars and write a little music.
With the help of Aaron Watson, Hunter has come so far. He has played at Wild West, The Blue Light, Midnight Rodeo, Hurricane Harry’s, Blaine’s Pub and many more places. At Texas Tech he has played for Tri-Delt’s Delta After Dark, Alpha Phi Chilifest and Zeta’s Bid-Day. At Texas A&M he has played for the ladies of Tri-Delta and at the University of Texas, Alpha Phi. You could say he has full support from his fellows in the greek community. Hunter is a member of Delta Tau Delta and his brothers support him as well.
Chase Ozee is also a junior and a member of Delta Tau Delta. I got the chance to talk to him about Hunter and his experiences with the young country music singer. “In my time at Tech I have grown really close to Hunter,” Ozee said. “I am his brother in Delt, roommate, and fan. I have seen him grow so much over the two or so years I’ve know him and I can’t wait to see where his music career leads in the future.”
Last week, Tuesday, March 3, to be exact, Hunter's newest album “What Do You Say” was released on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify. He is proud of this album and considers it a great accomplishment. “My favorite single on the new album is 'Dance All Night,'” he said. “It has been the number one requested song on 105.3 The Red Dirt Rebel and it’s just a fun, upbeat track that adds to the album.” Check out his new songs and older ones on iTunes. And if you attend Texas Tech, maybe try snagging a photo with him on campus. Who knows, he may end up in the Country Music Hall of Fame some day.
