I want to be honest. This week has been hard on so many levels. My eyes have been opened to the corruptness of this world, and it has troubled me all week. It started on November 8 with the election. All day people argued back and forth about each candidate and why their candidate deserved to be elected as president. The moment that it was determined that Donald Trump had received the required 270 electoral votes, all hell broke loose.
The moment Trump won, the chaos of the campaign trail escalated to a whole new level. People traded their verbal threats for physical altercations. Peaceful and violent riots erupted across the nation. People have been emotionally hurt. Some have been hurt physically. Some cowards have gone so far as to shooting others.
I have a question. What is this doing for our nation? The moment that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton were nominated for their parties, a tear was formed on the paper that is our country. As weeks went by and the nominees promised radical reform and fought at debates, the tear drove farther down the paper. The night Trump won, the paper was ripped in half, as was our country. Most people were on one side or the other. One side was dedicated Trump supporters that worshiped the ground he walked on, and the other was furious anti-Trump, pro anybody-but-Trump advocates. The divide in our country was evident.
As this week progressed, it has only gotten worse. Verbal altercations became more intense. Violent protests increased in numbers and locations. Instead of coming together as a nation, we have split now more than ever. The United States of America is not so united right now.
Here's where I want to be honest. What's the point? What is the point of tearing down a country that is supposedly about to be torn down by the next president? People claim that Trump will destroy the US, yet people are already doing it for him.
Instead of tearing down our cities, why don't we build them up? Instead of harming our fellow Americans, why don't we love on them? Instead of criticizing every move and breathe Donald Trump makes, why don't we support him? I am not saying that you need to bow down to him and agree with everything he is proposing. That's not how it works. I am saying, however, that he is the next president and that is not going to change. We the people need to rally behind him as he attempts to "make America great again" (his words, not mine). It is impossible to shame him for his extreme beliefs, and in return take extreme measures to display our emotions.
So, let me be honest. If you voted for Trump, cast your ballot for another candidate, or simply stayed away from the polls, we need to come together as the United States of America. As the pledge states, we are one nation under God. If the hate continues among ourselves over the next four years, we may not be so united when his first term comes to an end. Sure, it seems like Trump has a lot of hate he needs to fix himself as well. Causing riots and spreading hatred among each other will not change him. At this point we need to stand firm, stand strong, and stand united.
