Missing Home:
Everyone can relate to feelings of missing family or friends from back home; no matter where they are from, or how far removed they are. It just comes with the territory of leaving the place you are most comfortable with. A lot of us have lived in the same area our entire lives thus far. Home is that special place where you made your first friend, created everlasting memories at, as well as where you spent time learning the most about yourself. A new zip code seems simple right? There you'll have a new life, new opportunities, new people. It will be perfect and better then the home that you are used to. College students, or anyone else who has recently relocated, can tell you straight up that it is not that simple. Leaving can be scary and worrisome. You may love the new location but can still feel empty because of homesickness.
Support:
You can't take your mom with you to college. I mean...you can, but it's not practical. She has a life too you know. She certainly can not shack up in the dormitory with you. The love and care that your mother, father, grandmother, grandfather, aunt or uncle, provided you with in your childhood is no longer just a step away from your bedroom. Phone calls, Face-time, text messages, emails, and maybe if you're lucky an occasional visit will simply have to do. Many would agree that it is not enough to just talk to someone through a device when you miss them. I know when I miss my family, I want to be with them, hugging them, and participating in the events that are going on at home while I am away.
Stronger:
It is important from time to time to remove yourself from what you're used to. It allows for growth. You won't want to be dependent forever so going out of state for college, or relocating to a new city is a good experience. It will teach you not to take those special relationships for granted, allow you to miss and appreciate your loved ones more, and it can teach you a lot about yourself. Sure there will be times where you are so homesick that you feel like giving up, packing up your stuff and moving right back on home. Don't give up though, the experience is going to give you a thick skin to use when you experience even more serious emotions. Think of how grown up you will feel once you get past your homesickness and start to view it as a lesson on appreciation. Just remember, home may be where your mom is, but venturing out is necessary for growth! Don't let fear stop you from growing.
"Fear defeats more people than anyone thing in the world." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
