5 Home Comforts That Prove Dorm Life Can Never Trump Being Home

There's nothing like coming home, especially after being away at school for so long.

Though college life is full of fun and freedom, it can be hard. You don't have a kitchen filled with everything you need to cook yourself a delicious meal, your bed is five feet off the ground, and there's constant noise.

At home, there are so many little things we don't realize that we take for granted. After coming home for the week with the flu, I noticed all the things I loved about being home, and what I can't wait to come back to in a few weeks for summer break.

1. The dog.

Though FaceTiming your doggo is fun, nothing beats finally being reunited and cuddling for hours with your little fur-ball.

2. The shower.

I won't even get into dorm bathrooms, we all know how bad they are. So during your first shower back at home, take a second to appreciate the lack of hair and dirt on the floor and the fact that you aren't wearing shoes while you bathe.

3. The food.

Whenever I come home, my dad always offers to make me one of his famous fancy sandwiches, which is something I miss terribly at school. Not only is there a whole kitchen to make food in, but there's a full-sized pantry stocked with food that you didn't have to pay for. And that's something I'll never take for granted again.

4. The bed.

I don't care how nice your foam topper is at school, it will never beat coming home and flopping down on your bed in your own room.

5. The quietness.

If you're anything like me, the noise of college is hard to deal with. There's constant chatter, and coming back to a house of only three people in a quiet suburb is a much-welcomed change of pace. Although, after living in a dorm, I can no longer sleep without a fan on (because my roommate is a genius who introduced me to the magical world of white noise).

* * *

Whether you're just home for a few weeks this summer, or are getting ready to spend the next three months lounging on the couch, don't forget to remember how lucky you are to have a quiet, clean, comfy home to relax in. And enjoy it while you can, because soon enough we'll be back to dining halls and communal bathrooms.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
