You're back in your city, your territory of 18ish years, your town. The unspoken competition begins — and don’t pretend you don’t know what I’m talking about — to see how many times you can declare to the world that, yes, you’ve returned. SnapChat feeds are filled with 6-second Geotagged MyStories of various skylines.
There’s nothing to be ashamed of, though. After all, you haven't been able to utilize such Geotags in a few months. There are bound to be a few things you’ve missed. Here are just a handful of traditional delicacies among the long list of things previously taken for granted.
1. Ready-made, hot pots of coffee. Feeding off of your parents’ morning routine is such a privilege.
2. Automatic laundry service. All you have to do is hand off your dirty clothes saying, “See you on the other side,” and they magically reappear the next day clean and folded. No expense necessary.
3. Groceries. The refrigerator/pantry is consistently overflowing — a sight you’re unaccustomed to seeing.
4. Adoration galore. Everyone is so happy to see you. Reunion is one perk of missing people.
5. Home-cooking. I can't stress enough how special and appreciated this one is. Thank you Mom! You single-handedly remind me that good things can still happen to good people.
6. Everything is always clean. Mirrors aren't streaky, sinks don't gather toothpaste, floors don't make you fear walking barefoot and dishes don't overflow in the sink.
7. Cable TV on a big screen. You come home to an array of all of your favorite recorded episodes that you've missed while being away. Time to spend the next three weeks catching up and binge-watching.
8. Unstoppable wifi.
9. Fireplaces. They have an unreal power to make the homiest home feel even more like heaven, plus they're warm.
10. Water pressure. The shampoo gets out of your hair in seconds. It doesn't get much better than that.
11. Curfews. It’s cool to know that someone cares so much. I like having to be accountable to someone (and this is coming from a girl who regularly broke curfew in high school).
12. Irreplaceable best friends. You've all grown up together, you know each other's families as though they're your own. There’s no squad like your squad.
13. No parking tickets.
14. Personal grooming. Girls, there's a good chance you'll score a free (and much-needed) mani/pedi during your time at home.
15. Local, much-loved hangouts. All I want for Christmas is you, Qdoba.
16. Social media is prime for stalking. One could argue that you’re “meeting” your college friends' families, considering every news feed is flooded with pictures and videos featuring everyone's childhood homes.
17. Oven access. Cookie dough doesn't have to stay raw anymore.
18. Family pet. The best friend you could possibly come home to see.
19. Your bed. After years of hard work, the mattress conforms to your body. It’s literally a spot that only you can fill.
20. Uninterrupted sleep. Stay up, sleep in, no one cares. You can finally recover from finals.
Prior to leaving for college, you underestimated the necessity of these privileges. Laundry, coffee-making, cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping and even frequent adoration are all an art form that must be perfected, earned and appreciated by none other than yourself. Time will pass quickly and you'll be ready to head back to your university, where everyone bleeds the same school colors and you no longer have to debate your friends on the season's football rankings. Your sense of "home" will spread slowly over to a new place, but that will never change the special uniqueness of the place you came from.
Thank you to everyone and everything that makes home feel like home. You’ve got my heart.
