If you are from Massachusetts, you either choose Mike's or Modern, there is no in between. Both have world renowned desserts, but both differ in their own very specific way. So lets take a dive in to the world Of Mike's vs. Modern.
Mike's Pastry
Mike's Pastry, a well known pastry shop on Hanover Street in Boston, Massachusetts has been saving the world one cannoli at a time. Not only do they serve cannoli's, but they offer their wide variety of cookies, biscotti, and other delicious treats. Mike's Pastry has many, many benefits, but also has less appealing aspects to it. However, these flaws are not really that negative, but they are something that a regular customer of Mike's Pastry would know.
One huge benefit of making the trip to Mike's Pastry is the quality of the desserts. Mike has been in the baking industry for 50 years, and has learned phenomenal techniques from all around the world, including Italy. Another huge benefit that adds on to that beautiful quality is how every ingredient and flavoring is hand selected by the one and only Mike himself. Now, for these "negatives", and I am putting that in quotation marks because like I said, they are not really negatives. One thing that could be changed is how Mike's Pastry only accepts cash. This is not really a lot to ask, but if you are unaware of this after you wait in line, you may be a little upset when the employee tells you "Cash Only". This happened to me the first time I went to Mike's, luckily I had cash with me. Another little drawback to Mike's Pastry is the waiting line. Devote yourself at least a half and hour, sometimes more. The wait is so beyond worth it though. If you really do not want to wait for a lifetime to get a cannoli or other pastry from Mike's, if you walk about 500 feet down the street, there is a little bakery known as Modern Pastry.
Modern Pastry
Modern Pastry is located on Hanover Street in the North End in Boston. It is a family owned business that was made over 70 years ago. As opposed to Mike's Pastry, Modern Pastry is quite small. But, this does not mean they do not have just as delicious pastries as Mike's. Modern Pastry almost never has a line out the door. What I like about Modern Pastry is that they fill their cannolis to order instead of letting them sit in a case all day. This leaves the cannolis soggy and not as crisp. They come in many different options of shell and filling. Along with cannolis, Modern Pastry also sells pies, cookies, wedding cakes, and a variety of Italian pastries.
So what bakery will you choose...Mike's or Modern?
