The new dorms have been getting a lot of hype lately, which made me very curious. I had to know: Are they as good as people make them out to be?
I finally made the trek down there and I was amazed. It was like entering a whole new world. While I was still in shock one of my friends mentioned how much the new dorms looked like Hogwarts. After that, it seemed like everything else we saw reminded us of something "Harry Potter." They seem to have taken all of the magical parts of Hogwarts and put them into the dorms.
1. Muggles
When you walk into the Residential Commons it feels like you're transported into another world. The original campus feels almost boring compared to the perfectly manicured towers of the Residential Commons. To most of the upperclassmen, there is an air of mystery about the new dorms. And like a Muggle wandering into the wonderful Wizarding World, the upperclassmen do not venture there often. But when we do, it comes as a complete shock of how wonderful everything is.
2. Professors
Sometimes going to a larger school means the professors won't know your name unless you seek them out. In the Residential Commons the professors live in apartments attached to the different ‘Houses.’ Much like Hogwarts, the students in the houses will bond with their house professor. Will the freshmen and sophomores have their own Professor Snape and Professor McGonagall to consult in cases of crisis?
3. Dining Hall
The new dorms have state of the art dining with giant multimedia screens. Much like the ever-changing ceiling of the Harry Potter dining hall, diners are constantly entertained. One of the main comments from students is how amazing the new dining hall is and how it is better than the older ones. I think that this shows the environment where you eat your food greatly affects how it tastes.
4. Wands
Wands are obviously an essential for anyone at Hogwarts and any SMU student can tell you that their ID cards are a requirement. This is especially true to gain access to their dorms and their rooms. They just simply have to wave their ID cards (wands) to magically gain access to different areas around campus.
5. TriWizard Tournament
Part of the plans for the new dorm structure is to host friendly competitions between the houses. Much like the Triwizard Tournament, the new dorms know that some friendly competition can bring people together.
