- Versailles is set in 17th century France in the court of the studly King Louis XIV. It explores the sexual escapades of the King and his flamboyant cross-dressing brother Phillipe I, Duke of Orleans. - Peaky Blinders takes place on the mean streets on Birmingham, England in the early 1900s. Starring Cillian Murphy as Tommy Shelby the head of the gypsy clan the ‘Peaky Blinders’ Plenty of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, well dressed men doing bad things, looking ever so cool whilst doing it, can be found on Netflix.
- The Cadfael series is an oldie but goody. It originally aired before some of you were born. Nevertheless, it is great and one of a kind series set during a time in English called the Anarchy that plunged England into a bitter civil war, between years 1135 and 1154. It follows Cadfael, warrior monk, former Templar Knight with an extensive knowledge of herbs and plants. He solves murders, heals the sick and saves the day in every episode. Ellis Peters aka Edith Pargeter was a genius! This series could use some serious digital remastering. Can you spot any actors you have seen before? - HBO’s Rome this series is ten years old and just as entertaining as when it first aired between 2005 and 2007. Starring Kevin McKidd as the intense and totally badass Lucius Vorenus and Ray Stevens as the lady-killer and well, regular old killer Titus Pullo of the legendary 13th Legion. Major historic events of the time are interwoven in the story of the two men. They are witness to the crossing of the Tiber by Julius Caesar. Titus Pullo’s character is friends and tutor to young Augustus, in the art of war and love. This series is an exotic, hard to watch, hard to look away feast for the eyes. There are times when you can almost smell the sweat, sex, and blood on the filthy streets of ancient Rome, Amazon Prime carries this series.
- The White Queen, released by Starz in 2013 is adapted from the novel of the same title by Philippa Gregory, is about the War of the Roses set in 1464. Max Irons stars as Edward VI the handsome and enigmatic contender for the throne, conqueror who is destined to be king. This series focuses on the powerful women of the era, one Elizabeth Woodville, is the ‘White Queen’ played by the beautiful Rebecca Ferguson. She faces a court that is hostile to her and her family, and uncertainty of such a fractious time in English history. This is historical fiction so expect some speculation as to details in the how and why of things. Historic inaccuracies aside this miniseries has all the elements of great entertainment.
