Every election there is an uproar about how professional politicians keep winning their elections and about how sick people are with these big corporation "puppets" placed into roles that benefit the corporation over the individual. Yet every election the American populous keeps voting in the same people they claim to despise, why is this? Why is there a perpetual cycle that seems to repeat itself and never ends? Looking forward as Hillary Clinton seems likely to win the democratic nomination, this seems a good of time as any to examine the relationship between what the people say they want and what their vote implies.
The thought that the general voter is sick of the professional politician is something constantly repeated. They constantly complain about how they only work for their backers and constantly screw the general public. There are continual cries for change and wanting something different, yet we always back what is most comfortable and what we already know. This election cycle is no different on the democratic side as current Hillary Clinton is in the lead and projected to win her nomination with ease.
To understand the discrepancy between what people say and what they do, first we must do a quick summation of the candidate herself. Hillary is certainly the very definition of a corporate politician with several large corporate backings including the company that owns CNN of up to 400,000 dollars. (Hanley, Brian. "Money Talks: Why CNN Wants You to Believe That Hillary Clinton Won the Democratic Debate." The Huffington Post. TheHuffingtonPost.com. Web. 10 Nov. 2015.) This ownership group is part of the reason for the popularity of Hillary; CNN has a vested interest in keeping a politician in power that has the company's best interest at heart. Hillary has convinced many corporations that she is right for the job for this she gets positive press and many of her rivals contributions get spun or flat out ignored.
The recent CNN poll that was taken down because of the public voting for Bernie and replaced with a poll favoring Hillary after the last democratic debate is enough to see the connect there. This convinced many people that indeed Hillary won the debate and swayed their vote to her direction. She has also voted for many policies that are now considered negative in the eyes of the general public, including the Iraq War, the bail out of banks, Patriot Act and Glass Steagall Act just to name a few.
So why despite all of these things going against her is she still considered the favorite? The answer to this is simple: familiarity. We know what to expect out of Hillary and most people would rather have the known then the unknown.
People can cry all they want about how things should be different, but when your vote constantly proves otherwise, there is no reason for politicians to change and no reason for them to ever take you seriously.
Until we change the way we think and quit being scared off by buzz words and propaganda, people on every side of the political spectrum will continue to abuse how the business of politics is conducted.
