Whenever I'm home, I love to go hiking. My town is surrounded by the most beautiful mountains and trails, so in my free time, I love to explore a new place to hike. For years, my friends and I discovered the best hiking trails that are basically in our backyards. In my experience, here are my favorite places to hike in the Hudson Valley.
1. Harriman State Park
At 47,527 acres, Harriman State Park has endless hiking trails and lakes. There are over 200 miles of hiking trails and it is only 30 miles north of New York City. My friend and I actually just discovered the hiking trails of Harriman and we were amazed by the variety. There are trails for all levels and ages. In addition, there is a beautiful beach where you can swim and tan with your feet in the sand!
2. Anthony's Nose
I really don't know why this is called Anthony's Nose, for those of you that are curious like myself, but I do know that this is a great trail! This hiking trail is short and steep, so it may be a little hard for beginners. However, once you reach the top you have a beautiful view of the Hudson River.
3. Breakneck Ridge
Breakneck Ridge is as hard as it sounds. It feels like you will break your neck if you fall down this mountain. This is more rock climbing than it is hiking. This trail is extremely steep and is rated a ten out of ten difficulty. This trail is for the more experienced hikers. Do not take your first hike here (as I did many years ago)! It may be difficult, but once you reach the top at the flagpole, you will feel so accomplished as your legs are aching in pain and sweat is rushing down your back.
4. Constitution Marsh
Constitution Marsh Audubon Center and Sanctuary is a beautiful marsh located in Putnam County, where I live. While it has wonderful hiking trails throughout the marsh, it is also known for being a bird sanctuary. The bird sanctuary is truly extraordinary; you can see endangered species of birds such as the bald eagle!
5. Fahnestock State Park
Fahnestock State Park has probably the easiest hiking trails of the ones on my list. It has many lakes and hiking trails. In addition to hiking, you can go camping, skiing, hunting, and snowshoeing at Fahnestock. It is the perfect place to have a picnic and take a boat ride with family and friends!
