Going into college you have this feeling that everything is the same. Bells ring to make sure you are in class on time, teachers let you know every week what is due, people care about how they look and friends are hard to come by. I used to believe that high school was a miniature college minus the dorms. I was dead wrong.
In college, teachers aren’t going to keep reminding you of what is due. They give you a syllabus one time and from that point forward it is your job to get assignments turned in. Whereas teachers in high school, didn’t seem like it at the time, baby you. College is like opening a new world and putting on your big boy and girl pants. Your parents don’t call you every morning anymore to make sure you’re up. Your teachers aren’t going to show up at your house to see where you are at. You can either wake up on time and get to class or no one cares.
The main difference I have observed within the first few weeks is no one cares. No, not like they don’t care about grades, but no one cares if you don’t brush your hair. No one cares if your makeup isn’t “on fleek”. No one cares if you eat alone and no one cares what you wear. You can either take an hour getting ready or take five minutes; at the end of the day no one is going to notice it. So which am I choosing? Well that’s not hard to answer.
Finding friends is a hard yet exciting thing in college. Whether your roommate becomes your best friend or your worst enemy; you need to find someone. I personally base my friends off of who will benefit me in the long run and who will still be there four years down the road walking across the stage with me. You don’t choose friends in college to be popular. You choose them based on your success and who will succeed with you in the long run.
I never thought coming into college would change my outlook on the world this much but it has. It has changed my perspective and forced me to see the world from a different standpoint. It has challenged me every step of the way so far and I can’t wait to see where I end up. College is an exciting new adventure and I’m a curious student excited to see where it will take me in life. Looking at college in high school may have been scary but it is one of the best decisions you will make.
