High School Did Not Prepare Me For The Adult World

Everything I wish I would have learned before graduation.

High School Did Not Prepare Me For The Adult World

Going through grade school, you learn a lot. You are educated about formulas, important documents, vocabulary words, how to calculate areas and perimeters, etc. These are all very important lessons, and yes, occasionally you will use them in life after high school, but there are other crucial things I wish I would've learned before the "adult world."

We could start with how to even apply for college, and financial aid. Fortunately for me, I had a brother already in college, so I had help. Many people, however, are first-generation college students, and applying can be intimidating, and frustrating. If we were taught how to in high school, we might see a higher rate of students going to college as their next step after graduation. In preparation for college, it would have also been useful to learn about everyday college worries like budgeting, professionalism, interview skills or how to perform in a collegiate setting -- AKA all the things that hit you like a ton of bricks when you're on your own.

I also wish I would have learned more about other cultures. I used to live in a bubble, and didn't know much about other people until I traveled on my own time, and dime (speaking of traveling, traveling etiquette would have been nice). As well as learning how to vote, social graces, the metric system, sex education -- the list could go on.

There are big things I would have liked to understand, like CPR, first aid and how to do taxes. All the way down to the little things, like writing in cursive, how to tie a tie, addressing envelopes and writing checks. You might be thinking, "This is something you learn on your own, and through your family," but you also have to remember that students are not guaranteed these opportunities, or families that will teach them these life essentials, especially in this day and age.

If there was a mandatory class juniors/seniors in high school had to take, I think this would take away a lot of the little stresses in life that we focus on after high school. Generations above the Millennials always claim that we're lazy and dependent, but it's hard to be independent when we are not learning the little, but very important things. It may seem like something doesn't need to be taught, but it does. If we had a class like this, the world would be better prepared for what is to come.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
