High school is an interesting time. You are just starting to gain your own independence and learn who you are before you go off to college and have to make all of your own decisions. Usually there is at least one boy who you will have a crush on throughout high school. In some cases, this crush will last for a little bit longer than the standard month or two. There are boys who are smarter and more handsome than your crush, but you always seem to find your way back to this one boy.
Your friends all know. Your parents definitely know. Your sister knows and so does your little brother. Your teammates all know, at one point your coach asked you about it. You wonder if your crush knows. Don't worry about it, he knows too.
You can have a crush, it's perfectly normal. But there are times when you need to step away from that. You can be friends with your high school crush, but you always have to monitor yourself. There is a difference between keeping in contact because you still want to date them and keeping contact because you are acquaintances and you want to keep up with their life.
In high school the boy that I had a crush on was not the coolest boy in our grade, but he was definitely in the popular group. He wasn't the tallest boy in the group, the one who I tend to appreciate, but he was still the one who I always found myself drawn to. He made me laugh, even texting him for permission to indirectly mention him in this article I was laughing over our conversation.
But there are some people who are only met to be in your life to be a possibility. It is easy to keep a crush up on a pedestal when you never have to put in the hard work of a relationship with him. A possibility is always easier to love than a reality. But a possibility is dangerous if it's overly romanticized.
Be honest with yourself. If you had dated your high school crush when you were sixteen you probably would have broken up and been bitter about him. Your day dreams would have been sculpted around a different average boy, who you would be convinced was perfect for you. Your high school crush is not perfect for you and he probably never was.
You need to let go of your high school crush because it's probably stopping you from becoming a better you. Don't romanticize the past because it's not going to help you in the future. Stop telling yourself what could have been and start telling yourself about what your next relationship can be. You need to let go of your high school crush because your high school crush never hung onto you at all.
