The transition into high school can truly be an intimidating process. After all, it's a completely new atmosphere full of new expectations and new people. That scariest part of it all? You're expected to begin thinking seriously about your future: who or what do you want to become? But don't stress! Just keep these five tips in mind and you'll be set!
1. Freshman year counts!
It's normal to go into high school motivated to make friends. After all, who doesn't want to be one of the "cool kids"? But don't forget what you're there for! Education is important. Set aside time to study every night. I cannot stress this enough: your GPA and class rank are incredibly important! Don't make the mistake of waiting until junior or senior year to figure that out, because by then it's too late.
2. Get involved!
It doesn't matter if it's a sports team, band or chorus, a club that peaked your interest, or community service— just get involved! Not only does it give you a sense of time management, but it's a great way to put yourself out there and make friends with people who have similar interests. You'll be surprised how many of your high school friendships are derived from the extracurricular activities you participate in!
3. Drama does not matter.
This may be the hardest piece of advice to accept, especially in high school which is infamous for its never-ending supply of gossip and rumors. Just try your hardest to stay out of it, even when others are trying to drag you into the middle of it. After all, no one likes a drama queen. At the end of the day, you'll find yourself being much happier if you surround yourself with positive people who have bigger concerns in life than who Johnny kissed at the party last night. Try your best to avoid the drama, it's not worth your precious time.
4. Scholarships matter!
It's no surprise that college is expensive. Most people leave college in immense debt; that's why it's important you take advantage of any opportunity you have to get money thrown your way. If you have the chance to receive a scholarship, do not hesitate to at least try! Even if it's $100 here and $100 there, it adds up! Don't take the opportunity for scholarships for granted!
5. Enjoy your time in high school!
Welcome to what currently feels like the longest four years of your life. Stop staring at that clock in calculus class that never seems to move; high school really does fly by! At the time, those 4 years may feel like an eternity, but when you walk across that stage to receive your diploma, you won't have a clue where the time went. You will look into the crowd of faces and realize you'll never see many of them again. So cherish the time you have with them now. It may be hard to see in the moment, but if you take a step back, high school really isn't as bad as it sounds.
