In the past few years, Netflix has gone from a regular old, run of the mill streaming service to a staple for binge watching a huge variety of shows and movies, including some of their own very successful original programs. However, while we all may know of iconic Netflix originals like Stranger Things or Orange is the New Black, or even the extremely popular non-originals like Grey's Anatomy or even Moana, there are plenty of amazing shows and movies currently on Netflix that so many people have never heard of, or at least bothered watching. Well, as a certified Netflix connoisseur, I am here to inform you of some severely underrated shows and movies you can binge whenever you feel like it. This list is not definitive, and you may have already seen some of these, but from my experience in asking my friends if they've seen these shows or movies, the answer is generally no. So here we go!
Anne With An E
While there have been numerous adaptations of the L.M. Montgomery classic series, Netlflix's original show Anne With An E sets itself apart from the rest in the best ways possible. Even if you've never read any of the books in the Anne of Green Gables series, there truly is something for everyone in this beautifully moving and deeply touching television series. Anne has recently been renewed for a third season, and while it is gaining popularity, for the most part it is a relatively overlooked Netflix series. From incorporating historical stories as well as adding modern twists, AWAE provides an amazing story of building friendships, finding your home, and overall learning to be yourself. 10/10 would recommend.
Skins
Okay, admittedly, this show is not for everyone. However, if you're a fan of the super popular Shameless, then Skins may be right up your alley. This British television show garnered controversy for its explicit nature and language, but it also became a cult classic amongst teenagers both in the UK and the US. Many have praised Skins for being a relatable view into the struggles of modern day teenagers, while sometimes being a bit extreme. If you ever search up sad quote gifs on Tumblr, you're sure to find some scenes from Skins. Pro tip: make sure to watch the UK version, NOT the US version.
Tallulah
Another original, Tallulah is one of Netflix's most underrated movies. The story revolves around a young girl who is searching for her ex boyfriend and ends up kidnapping a baby from a careless and neglectful mother. Tallulah is jam packed with so many different emotions, you'll find yourself feeling for and relating to all of the characters, even though I'm willing to bet most of us have not kidnapped a child after a failed babysitting gig. The chemistry between Ellen Page and Allison Janney is too real (P.S. The West Wing is another show you should totally watch), and the entire movie is so frustrating and moving, you'll find yourself at least tearing up by the end.
Miss Stevens
Although this film contains some familiar faces like Timotheé Chalamet (Call Me By Your Name, Ladybird), Lili Reinhart (Riverdale), and Lily Rabe (American Horror Story), Miss Stevens hardly receives the admiration it deserves. The story tackles both the struggles of high school students as well as their young teacher as they embark on a school trip for the drama club. Along with handling topics such as mental illness and complicated relationships, the film also presents realistic and painful views into the lives of teenagers and adults. Not to mention, the soundtrack is pretty bomb.
Little Evil
Yet another Netflix original makes the list. To be honest, I'm not really sure how many people have or have not seen this movie, but it is one of my personal favorites and certainly worth mentioning. Little Evil manages to use spoof humor without ever being unnecessarily dumb or annoying. All of the humor is well thought out and clever, and having Adam Scott (hello Parks and Rec fans!) as the lead is surely a bonus. This film is sure to be appealing to both comedy and horror lovers, and just about everyone in between.
