Everybody looks forward to laying on the couch Friday nights after a long week of school or work, and turning on their favorite channel and enjoy that time to relax. There’s always that go-to channel you turn on, sometimes subconsciously without thinking about it, just because you like most of the shows it has to offer. My absolute go-to is HGTV, Home & Garden Television. It probably sounds weird for a 21-year-old to say that, but I always have and always will love watching HGTV.
Ever since I was little, I’ve had a dream of being a designer. I would rearrange my bedroom almost every month by measuring the furniture and then drawing out a little sketch to make sure everything fit like I wanted. I’m also like a kid in a candy shop when I go to a craft store because of all the untapped potential I see with the materials around me. I love combining different colors and patterns to see the result or coming up with a completely new idea if I don’t like how my original idea turned out. I also really enjoy refurbishing furniture to bring out the new in the old, or sometimes the old in the new. I love how designing challenges my creativity and imagination, along with just being a fun project to do, and HGTV has definitely been one of the main contributors to my creative skills and widening imagination.
I also have an addiction to looking at houses. I like comparing them, seeing what the different tiers of money can get you in different areas and states, along with deciding what type of style I like so I’m prepared when I buy my first house. That’s the purchase I’m most excited for when the time comes for it because I can’t wait to make it my own and set-up for how I want to live. What I have seen on some HGTV shows has already helped me plan what most of the rooms in my house are going to look like. The idea of house flipping when I’m older seems really fun as well. I like the concept of taking something old but functional and making it new and beautiful again with a little hard work and good design. I always learn something about design or houses in general from every show I watch on HGTV. I look forward to the day when I can apply what I’ve learned to a house of my own.
From "Fixer Upper", to "Flip or Flop", to "House Hunters Renovation" all the way to the "Property Brothers", it’s hard not to love what HGTV is showing at any time of the day. These shows have helped spark my creativity and inspired some crafts and furniture pieces I have in my apartment already, as well as has me looking forward to the future of house buying and renovating. For all these reasons, HGTV has definitely become my go-to TV station and a possible addiction.
