Hey, you! Yeah, you! Listen up!
I have something to tell you.
I know you think you’re superwoman, but that fact of the matter is, you’re not. Do you know what else? No one expects you to be superwoman. In fact, it’s impossible. You aren’t some imaginary figure that can run non-stop for days on end saving the world.
Yeah, I know, you probably weren’t expecting that. I bet when you first clicked on this article, you were expecting me to say something that made you believe you can do it all. Unfortunately, that’s not always true.
In today’s society, so many of us have become set on becoming superwoman that sometimes we forget that we’re only human. We are all given the same 24 hours in a day to accomplish everything. In that time we need to sleep, eat, bathe, go to class, go to work, and do other things.
Do you know what makes it even worse? For some reason, we become so dead set on checking off items on our to-do list that we forget to have fun. Instead of saying no to that one thing that one person wants us to do, but we don't want to do, we say yes. We sacrifice what we want to please others and make them believe we are invincible. When we fail to accomplish any of these things, we shame ourselves.
You might be thinking, I don’t shame myself when I don’t complete something. Well maybe you don’t, and if so good for you. However, do you ever feel disappointed when you miss a workout or don’t finish that project soon enough? What about those cookies for the bake sale? They didn't turn out as you wanted, but you took them and apologized the whole time for how horrid they looked. And that test in bio last week? You messed up a few questions. They should have been easy, but you blanked, and instead of an A you received a B.
Tell me again how you didn’t shame yourself.
I do it; you do it, we all do it. Sure, realizing all the ways in which you shame yourself sucks. This is especially true if you have the superwoman persona that I described earlier.
There is this unique thing about superwomen; we don’t like admitting we can’t do it all. Eventually, we become run down, worn out, and just plain exhausted. Our once nearly flawless work becomes lost, and now we don't even recognize who we are anymore. It's unfortunate but true.
So you, yeah you. Stop for a moment. Take off your cape. Enjoy the people around you. You only have a limited time to live so enjoy it before it's over.
Sincerely,
A Recovering Superwoman
