Here Come The Irish: Notre Dame Goes Digital

Whether it's for academics, the Golden Dome, or an unforgettable 37-0 win over the University of Michigan football, there's no denying that Notre Dame is a well-known school. As a rising junior at the university, I can barely walk down the street in an ND shirt without someone shouting "Go Irish"! With a school boasting over 400 clubs and organizations, it's a little shocking that among these clubs there are no online journaling opportunities, especially for a university that promotes creativity and unity. Until today, that is…

Because Notre Dame has just opened a chapter of The Odyssey, a web-based undergraduate journal that's taking the nation by storm!

By joining The Odyssey, Notre Dame will provide students the chance to apply to be writers, and write creative articles about anything from current events to their perspectives on life!

As Editor In Chief, I'm so excited to see the kind of ideas and articles that come from the bright minds of ND students. There are so many creative and innovative minds I interact with each day at Notre Dame, and I can't wait for them to be able to share their unique mindsets and opinions with the world!

I'm also really excited to show the world what Notre Dame is like from a student's lens. From parietals to quarter dogs, Notre Dame is such a unique university (say that five times fast!), and sometimes it can be hard to articulate what day-to-day life is like there. Thats where The Odyssey comes in! By becoming an Odyssey writer, ND students can share everyday campus experiences, or whatever else is on their mind.

Here are some things I've had trouble explaining to non-ND students/family/alumni:

1. Parietals

We live in single-sex dorms, and after midnight Sunday-Thursday and 2am Friday and Saturday, students can't have anyone of the opposite sex in their room. This fact has been known to delight the elderly, and horrify non-ND undergraduates.

2. Taco Bell

At ND, Taco Bell is one of the only places open past 2am on weekends. Before college, I (and many others within the ND student Body), vowed to never let Taco Bell enter my temple of a body. Now, two years later, I have been known to let TBell enter my sacred temple at 1pm on a Wednesday afternoon. On more than one occasion. It's one of those things every ND student loves despite the knowledge that it may, in fact, kill them one day.

3. We Go To Mass in Pajamas

There's a chapel in each dorm, meaning we attend mass on Sunday night in our respective dorms, meaning nice pants are not required. Meaning on Sundays I rarely get out of my pajamas. Can I get an Amen?

4. North Or South? There Can Only be One Answer.

There are 2 dining halls. It is the unspoken rule that you ally with one. This may be the biggest decision of your young collegiate career. Forget about picking a major, would you rather have pizza or stir fry every night?? Remember to always ask the real questions.

5. GAME DAY.

There are 6 home football games a year, which means we get 24 in our ND career. Everyone knows that these 24 days are sacred, and WILL be some of the best of our lives. From the second we wake up excited to tailgate and cheer on our boys, to the minute we pass out from exhaustion, the entire ND student body comes together for the most incredible thing in the world- GAME DAY.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Whether you met your new love interest online, through mutual friends, or another way entirely, you'll definitely want to know what you're getting into. I mean, really, what's the point in entering a relationship with someone if you don't know whether or not you're compatible on a very basic level?

Consider these 21 questions to ask in the talking stage when getting to know that new guy or girl you just started talking to:

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
