Helping Out Earth: A Topic That Shouldn't Be Controversial
Julia Sattler

People, who know me well, know that I am an advocate for all ideas that are environmentally friendly. The average person, however, may not be aware that I have any kind of interest in those types of ideas at all. Growing up, I would always speak of my keen interest in participating in extra work of being more conservative of the Earth’s resources. Through the years, however, I’ve started to realize that the belief in maintaining a healthy and clean earth has an almost controversial connotation with it. This is an absurd way of thinking that should not be the “norm” in any human society. Why should any idea that encourages proper treatment of what is essentially every human’s home be looked down upon, or carefully avoided?

I understand and respect that there are different opinions and beliefs in this world. I also understand that the encouragement of recycling and conserving water and other resources tends to some sort of tie to the belief that global warming is real. Global warming has become quite a “hot” topic for our country. I learned at a young age that not everyone believes global warming is real, and eventually I stopped freely mentioning any topics that might lead to the disagreements. To this day, I hastily tried to steer clear of potential anger from another person. Perhaps, however, it is time to stop fearing the wrath and conflicting opinions of others and claim my passion for protecting the planet. Encouragements of recycling, conserving energy and water, and other environmentally friendly acts shouldn’t have a negative or controversial connotation.

Here are the facts: planet Earth is our home. There is no other place besides Earth that is able to allow humans to live the way they do. So, why not take proper care of your home? It’s a simple concept, really, and it should be considered common sense. Take care of something that is delicate and precious that supplies you with life. Forget what your stance is on global warming. A conscious effort to maintain this planet for our generation and generations to come should be something everyone takes pride in.

As inhabitants of this unique planet, we have a duty to educate ourselves in how to take care of our home and to act accordingly. Just as you would with a new fancy device or your car, you should take the time to learn about what works and what doesn’t. It could be a very small change in your daily schedule that could end up making a large difference.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
