You hear the phone ring. You pick it up, only to hear, "Hello, its me." Suddenly, for reasons unknown to you, there are tears streaming down your face. This, my friends, is the power that Adele has over us. Her brand new song, "Hello" has been released for less than two weeks now and it has already broken several records. After about three years of being out of the spotlight, Adele has done it again. In fact, this wild popularity for "Hello" might be because of Adele's long silence.
Upon hearing just the lyrics, nostalgia hits you like a pound of bricks. You'll think of every failed relationship you've ever had and wonder if it really is that easy, just to call your ex up and say that you're sorry. But as the song continues, you'll realize that it's not that easy, and that's why Adele is belting out the words in the first place. When you get tired of just listening to the song and it doesn't make you sad anymore, you have to watch the video.
Coming in at the second-fastest video to reach one hundred million views on YouTube, second only to Psy's "Gentleman", "Hello" is smashing records left and right. It also beat out Taylor Swift's "Bad Blood" and Miley Cyrus's "Wrecking Ball" for the record in most single-day Vevo views. The video is just as powerful as the song, with deep sepia and slow motion sequences set amongst old dusty homes that stir nostalgia and abandoned phone booths in forests that surround Adele. Its sultry and serious and does exactly what the song does: makes you think and feel sad. Very Adele.
Next week, "Hello" is projected to take the number one spot on the Billboard top 100. This is not the first time that Adele has smashed the charts, and success is not new for her. At age 25 (the same age as Taylor Swift, for those of you who care) has released two full albums titled 19 and 21 and both have gone multi-platinum in both the United States and the United Kingdom. So many of her singles have hit number one on the charts. In fact, Adele is the first woman to have three simultaneous singles in the top ten of the Billboard Top 100. Her singles "Someone Like You", "Rolling in the Deep", "Skyfall', and "Chasing Pavements" are all wildly popular and are now added to by her new single "Hello".
Over the years, Adele has been the pop ballad singer who has truly stuck to her morals and been very honest about the industry, which has gotten her labeled as "refreshing" and "mature" as compared to her other pop counterparts. Adele's new album, titled 25, is set to be released on November 20th and is projected to reach the top of the charts upon its release. In a world full of men in music and women singing about taking other women down and their heartbreak over boys, Adele's heavy-hearted ballads and her strong lyrics represent all that is true and good and honest with songwriting in today's society.
