Most people find it weird sleeping with a stranger. These same people find it uncomfortable waking up next to someone that they barely know. In the college atmosphere, these kinds of things happen unfortunately, and it's quite common, actually.
One of the scariest parts of transitioning to college is the whole roommate situation. A fair amount of students request to dorm with others who they know already. But what about those who aren't in that situation? More often than not, these unlucky candidates go in blind and choose to be randomly paired up with a roommate.
Going in blind is probably one of the best decisions you can make when selecting your roommate. That "weird" girl with the lizard in your room may very well end up being your best friend for life.
Not knowing who your roommate is going to be can be suspenseful. It's like playing the lottery. You never know who you'll end up with. A random roommate assignment can pair you up with anyone regardless of culture, ethnic background, etc. When people live with someone who has a different lifestyle and set of beliefs, they unknowingly become more insightful in areas that they weren't before. This newly acquired sense of open-mindedness can go along way in today's society.
Sometimes those individuals who choose someone they know as a roommate end up making one of the worst decision of their lives. Best friends can turn to sworn enemies when they have to live with each other. Or... just live with them for a little bit.
People find it comforting to know that they'll be living with their friend for a year. However, it's always good to step out of your comfort zone and experience something new. Choosing a random roommate can be the best or worst decision of your life. Although this is the case, it's almost a 100 percent chance that you will learn something from a random roommate. This learning experience will last a lifetime.
