5 Reasons Why Having A "Big" Is Amazing
Alex Newman

As every member of Greek Life knows, along with joining a chapter comes a “big.”

Some people come into college already feeling close with older girls, whereas others have no idea who half of the older girls are (this was me).

In my sorority, we go on “deeph dates” to try and meet older girls who we might click with and who might be our potential bigs. In my experience, I met my big on the very first deeph date. After talking to her for 5 minutes, it was clear we had so much in common.

However, while you might click with a girl, it doesn’t necessarily mean she is going to be your big. For months I talked to different girls and eventually there was a reveal. After this reveal, I was able to officially call the girl I had the first deeph date with my big and we have been inseparable ever since.

Here are 5 reasons why having a big is amazing:

1. She knows every answer

When you are new to a sorority, you might have a lot of questions (I did)! You might even have questions about things that are outside of the sorority (what classes to take or where to eat). Your big is the perfect person to help you navigate your new campus life and to guide you in the right direction.

2. She gives AMAZING advice

Your Big slowly becomes your best friend and before you know it she knows you better than you know yourself. Whenever you are having boy troubles or problems with your friends, she is ALWAYS there with the perfect text to send or the perfect advice. Sometimes it is so beneficial to have an outsiders perspective.

3. She will always be there on those late nights

Even though you and your Big might not go out on the same night, you still text each other constantly to give them any updates and all of the gossip. When it gets really late at night, you can count on your big to be texting/FaceTiming you on your walk/Uber home. She is truly there all hours of the night.

4. She gives you lots of goodies

While big/little week is filled with many treats and food, you can always count on your big to give you a goodie to cheer you up. Whether it is a gift for having surgery, a small gift to tell you that they miss you or a gift to say they are proud of you, your big is always the most thoughtful.

5. She is your best friend

At the end of the day, your big truly becomes your best friend. She is someone you can confide in and someone you can mass text without experiencing any judgment. She is the older sister you never had and the person you couldn’t live without. You forget there is even an age difference between you because she fits right in with your friends. Your big is amazing.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
