Have you ever heard someone say the old sang, "Respect your elders"? Our generation and the ones that come behind us are disrespectful, in some cases, to grandparents and to their parents, in most cases. I am not talking about everyone in our generation, but you know the ones I am talking about.
The elderly have so much knowledge and wisdom. Have you ever just sat at a table for hours on end just listening to the stories they are telling, what it was like as a child for them and what its like for children now? The times have certainly changed. And I will admit, our generation now is a little spoiled with the things we have.
A few of the more common stories I have heard, especially living in North Dakota, is when they were younger they traveled to school in the winter. They had to travel by foot in less than zero-degree weather. Some people even traveled five miles one way. They went to school everyday, but in today's day and age, they just call school off if the weather is storming so bad.
Just sitting around a table, they have so many insights that we can still use today.
They have interesting remedies for when we are sick and have a little cold. They also are the hardest working people, in my opinion — especially for the women power. They stayed home and took care of the kids and always had a home-cooked meal on the table ready for dinner. Some of the women even had fresh baked desserts ready.
In our society, we are so spoiled thinking that we don't have enough time in a day to take care of the kids or make a home-cooked meal every day. We have the time, we just need to take it. We can learn so much from the past generations. We can use their insight in our society today and for generations to come.
