It’s the most wonderful time of the year. It can also be one of the most stressful. We want to be grateful to spend time with family and friends and have some time away from classes. But sometimes it’s hard to keep what’s really important in perspective when you are running around buying gifts for everyone and their mother, decorating your house (last minute), getting a tree (also last minute), and feeling like you’ll never get everything done in time for Christmas. Sound familiar? I’ve thought of a few ways to make the holiday (craziness) a little less crazy.
1. Don't buy a gift for everyone that you know
While it is a nice gesture and you feel bad if you leave someone off of your list, it’s better for your mental health to not buy a gift for your boyfriend’s great-aunt Cheryl. If anything, just send them a card with well wishes. Who knows, they may be thinking the same thing!
2. Have a designated gift-wrapping/gift-storing room.
Instead of having presents, wrapping paper, and ribbon in every room of the house, assign a specific spot or room where all of the gifts will be handled. This will cut down on the clutter and clean up and make your life a lot easier.
3. Make a list (and check it twice).
Instead of doing your Christmas shopping in three or four trips (guilty), make a list of what you are going to get for your family and friends to make the trip a little less overwhelming. It’s so easy to forget something when you’re trying to remember so many things at once. Whether it’s the food you need for a Christmas party, gifts, or decorations, making a list will cut down on the precious hours and minutes you have before Christmas, because 365 days to prepare is just never enough time for anyone!
4. Remember what it’s all about.
While we love the presents, decorations, Santa cookies, and Christmas trees, remember that the things your family and friends will remember the most is spending time with you. Don’t get stressed out over an ornament hanging crooked or not finding the “perfect” gift. Spending time with family, Jesus, laughing, and telling stories is the greatest gift of all.
5. Take a minute to breathe.
If you are the type to get more overwhelmed and anxious during the holiday madness, which, if I’m being honest, we all can say we are guilty of doing, make sure you give yourself some time to relax. Sit on the couch, drink some hot cocoa, and give yourself a few minutes of peace!
