Most of you have probably heard about YouTube sensation’s Miranda Sings’s show “Haters Back Off!” which aired early October of this year on Netflix. This show is about Colleen Ballinger’s fictional character, Miranda Sings, and her life and journey in wanting to become a famous singer. This pilot season explained Miranda’s home life and introduced us to some of the crazy things she does and thinks.
Out of curiosity and boredom I watched the first episode. It was weird, so I had to keep watching. I knew it was bound to be kind of weird because Miranda is strange in general. But the show was a different kind of weird. The story wasn’t as funny as I thought. Actually, it had some really deep plot lines and the characters were very three-dimensional (in the sense that there was a lot going on in their lives). Her mother, for example, is a hypochondriac and wears a wrist brace even though she doesn’t need one. Miranda’s sister feels neglected and alone in the family because Miranda overshadows her. And if you read really far into the characters, Miranda has some deep seeded problems as well.
The thing I really liked about this show was – of course – Miranda. Her character makes you laugh, then she makes you angry, and then you feel bad for her. She’s the embodiment of what we are always thinking, but never have the guts to say. What I like to describe her as is the pro-antagonist. Sometimes you hate her, and sometimes you love her. But in the end, you will always love her.
In one sitting, I watched eight episodes. The next night, I finished the last two. I can honestly say that as weird this show is, it’s amazing. I couldn’t stop watching it and was so sad to hear that if there is going to be a next season, it isn’t airing until October of 2017 most likely. If you have the time, I would definitely give this show a watch.
