It took me a while to digest that one of my favorite series of all was coming out with a new addition, especially since the series was supposed to have had its last novel for almost ten years now.
Excitement was definitely my first reaction. There was going to be more to the story that I loved! I would probably never get tired of reading and re-reading the Harry Potter series. I feel that I get more out of the books each time I read them and I feel like I can see more of the build up to some of the secrets that are revealed. Harry Potter fans everywhere have been dreaming of this moment for almost ten years, and now it's finally going to come true.
While I am excited, I am also facing a bit of skepticism. The new story isn't entirely about Harry. It is also about his son Albus. I know J. K. Rowling wrote the epilogue of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to tie up lose ends to satisfy readers, but to me, it felt a lot like a Disney ending where everyone lives happily ever after. I know the reason for that was because it was supposed to be the definite end to the series, but I'm not sure if I am going to enjoy a book based off of the fairy tale ending.
Harry Potter fans need to be prepared that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is probably going to be nothing like the other seven books. To start off, it's not actually a novel, it's a script for a play. I think that it will be exciting for the Harry Potter series to take on a new form of entertainment, but for now it means the people in the United States will only get to read about it.
The script is also going to be an entirely different story. J. K. Rowling herself stated that it will be "neither a prequel or a sequel". I had a feeling that this would be the case since it was starting a whole new story with Harry's son. It may be a new story, but I feel like many people will have a hard time seeing it as such since there are so many of the same characters that have grown to love through one of the best series of all time.
I can't help but feeling that there isn't a way to bring Harry Potter back after all of this time. It is going to be nearly impossible for readers to separate their old feelings for some of these characters and accept a different story. None of this will stop me from buying the book and reading the script, but I'm definitely not sure of what my expectations are. I am still very excited, but nothing will replace the original Harry Potter series that I have grown to love. After all of this time? Always.
