Dear World,
There is so much negativity in our society at the moment that it got me thinking about our country and what it really means. You see there is a reason we are the greatest country. We have so much to thrive on, a country based on Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
The American Dream:
James Truslow Adams, in his book "The Epic of America" written in 1931, stated that the American dream is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement. It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position."
An introduction to the American Dream according to the Library of Congress. The American dream was an idea set in place in the early stages of our country's birth. It invited and encouraged people from all over to come to America and live a life where they can dedicate themselves to hard work, and from there they reap the benefit that is success.
I have grown up in a generation where if it doesn't come easy or quick people give up and throw a fit. For some reason we have got it in our heads that everything must be handed to us. That we deserve it. Whatever it is.
Someone is to pay my tuition. Someone is to pay for my living. Someone is to give me the job because I am me.
How did we get to that. Is it unfair that some people were born into wealthier families? Is it unfair that some people are give no chances and no breaks? No, no it is not fair. However, those of us who weren't lucky, we were blessed with so much more than others. We were born to respect those who work, we will understand the money we've earned. We will be able to tell our children and grandchildren that if you put your mind to it, if you believe that you can do it and you know that it will not happen over night you can achieve the dream.
You see our "American Dream" knows no race, gender, age, religion or sexuality. Though we face difficulties that not all understand; we can conquer and create our own stories of success.
