Many people who are getting into relationships know what love can be: happy, romantic, sweet. Relationships can be easy. They can go by quickly in a daze of dates, naps, lunches and talks. It's hard to imagine that two people who love each other with their whole heart can go through hard times.
Love isn't always easy. Love isn't always nice. It's not always happiness and romance.
Sometimes it's lying in the same bed wanting to talk but not knowing what to say. It's wanting to ask why they had a bad day but not knowing whether you should. It's wanting to lay next to them so they know that they aren't alone, but not knowing if they want to be touched.
It's sarcastic comments that aren't meant to hurt but do anyway. It's angry words that cause fights. It's knowing that maybe you say "I love you" too much or you get too clingy and that annoys them. But you do anyway. It's refusing to say goodbye when they leave because you don't want to say anything that will hurt worse. It's being told that they need to be alone so they don't take their anger out on you.
It's crying yourself to sleep — not because they hurt you, but because you know you hurt them. It's feeling like absolute crap when you know you should've been there for them but weren't. It's wanting to take back a few moments, change only a few words, just to change one feeling. It's knowing that you can always do better and that you should always do better.
It's trying to constantly make up for something that you wish you could take back. It's trying to show someone how much they mean to you, how much you love them.
It's wanting to be a better person for them but failing because you're only human.
Love is a mess.
It can be ugly and mean and sad. It's hard all the damn time. It's not always romantic.
But fighting for the person you love is worth it. Fighting for happiness is worth every moment that you know you're not enough.
Loving someone is the best thing a person can do.
