In life it is natural to have to say goodbye to people. We say goodbye for many reasons like death, moving away, simply going on with your day or just because that person was really just not meant to be in your life anymore. A goodbye is usually never easy and sometimes it might be the hardest thing in your life.
In high school you have hopefully had your first hard goodbye. You are saying goodbye to the people you have spent the last twelve years with and have found your comfort zone. You’re saying goodbye to your hometown and moving on to bigger and better things. Most of the time you don’t stay in touch with your friends from high school and very rarely is your group of friends the same as you left them; if that does happen, more power to you.
After this farewell, you come to college and here you meet your true friends. The people you spend four years with that turn into the people you spend your life with. When you walk across the stage you know that it will never be the same as it was. You are simply moving on, and so are your friends.
Then comes your second hardest goodbye: saying goodbye to your college friends. This very well may be the hardest thing that you will have to go through. I compare it to a break-up because, in all reality, they are taking a part of you that you can't get back. These are the friends that you have had all your crazy nights with, cried over guys with, had movie marathons with and really just enjoyed the college together.
The only reason why saying goodbye to your friends is better than a break is because you know that no matter how far apart you are they are still there for you to answer any text or phone call. You may not talk to them as much as you hope or see them as often as you would prefer, but they are still there. When you are finally reunited, whether it be a month, six months, a year or a few years, it is like nothing has changed. You pick up right where you left off with the laughs and that bond that is just as strong as it was in college. When reunited, you can look back on all the wild things you guys did together and discuss what is to come in the future.
When you find those friends, it is so special and rare. People come and go in your life and sometimes you wont even bat an eye, but when you have to let those people go it is hard. Saying goodbye to your college friends is tough, but it is not really a goodbye. It is more of a see you later. Once you make that bond, it can’t be broken. But before you say goodbye or see you later, make sure to thank and remind them how much you have loved having them in your life. Thank them for being those people you could always count on, the friends to experience the best time of your life with and just being there when everything else seemed like it was changing too fast. Thank them for being one of your hardest goodbyes.
