My Father's Favorite Things: Traffic & Weather

"Everybody is going on summer vacation!" my dad says in January.

Happy Father's Day to the man that makes me laugh until I cry. Now, I could write about how great and wonderful you are, but I'm not. You already know those things. Instead, I'm going to write about things that you love/hate: traffic and weather. These are two topics that you have a love/hate relationship with, but they never fail to put a smile on my face.

First, let's talk about traffic. This is such a dad thing to talk about, but you bring it to a whole new level. In my family, we have an inside joke about traffic and it's titled "Summer Vacation." Whenever there is traffic, my dad exclaims it is because "everyone is going on summer vacation!"

There's traffic in January?

It's because of summer vacation.

Traffic on a brisk autumn day?

Summer vacation.

According to my father, all traffic is caused by people going on summer vacation.

Now, let's talk about weather. My dad must've been a meteorologist in his past life because nothing excites him as much as weather. Recently, we had a tornado where I live and of course, this excited my dad. While I'm sitting in the basement coddling my shaking dog, he has the front door open watching the trees fall on power lines. I kept yelling at him to get back inside like he was MY child.

When he tells the story of the tornado to our friends and family, the story becomes more elaborate with each new person he tells it too.

To the first person, he says, "the wind was very strong."

To the second person, he says, "the wind was very strong and it blew my fence over."

To the thirst person, he says, "the wind was VERY strong, at least 120 MPH, and it blew over my fence and knocked over the old oak tree and I was struggling to stand up outside like I was freaking Dorothy staring at the Wicked Witch of the West!" (Okay, so maybe he didn't say exactly this, but it was along these lines.)

All that I'm trying to say here is that I love my dad and I love how passionate he is about traffic and weather. His stories never fail to put a smile on my face. Never stop loving traffic and weather, Daddy, and I'll never stop loving you. Happy Father's Day!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
