Halloween: Then Vs. Now

“In the real world, Halloween is when kids dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.” Thanks, Cady Heron, for clearing it up for all of us.

Halloween: Then Vs. Now

I have a love/hate relationship with Halloween because of my fear of everything scary but my love for dressing up. Of course, everyone in the entire world loves the scary stuff, so I try to put my big girl pants on and face my fears...but every year, I just end up crying. However things have changed over the years, and I'm not sure which Halloween version I like better because they both have their pros and cons.

First things first: costumes are obviously different since when we were 6. When we were younger, our parents dressed us head to toe in something adorable and probably warm. However, now we're freezing in something skimpy because what's cuter than a slutty mouse, duh. Costumes when we were kids were creative; like in my case, I dressed as an M&M… how did I even come up with that?  Now the goal is to be creative in a sexy way, but not to look too sexy, because even though Mean Girls says you cannot say anything about anyone if you dress too slutty, but we all know people are going to talk if you look like a prostitute… sorry not sorry.

The whole point of dressing up was to go beg for candy. If you were dressed cute, people gave you the good stuff, like the actual candy--not the stupid fun sized crap. Now if you went trick or treating in your college costume, I’m pretty sure the house you went trick or treating at would sit you down and ask you where your parents are (and if they even really love you). Or they might cover their daughter’s eyes and slam the door in your face. Just don’t go trick or treating anymore; you’re in college, you don’t need to waste the calories on candy they probably saved from last year, anyways.  Now instead of trick or treating, we are going out. Dressing up and going out with your friends is the most fun thing about Halloween. Instagram blows up with everyone’s different costumes, fighting for the most likes and the bars are making bank off of everyone trying to have a good time.

When we were kids, Halloween was one day. You had a party in your class if you were lucky, then went home and got ready to go trick or treating. Now, Halloween is almost a weeklong. The weekend starts on Wednesday night if you can handle your work and have your life together, so be prepared for five different costume ideas. DIY costumes are perfect for this because lets be honest, you’re going to make your bank account cry for outfits you should never wear again. You have from Wednesday to Saturday night to play dress up and go out with your friends in college, so I guess we never really grew up did we?

Finally, the things that were scary when we were little are now not scary at all. The truly scary things in movies and haunted houses now though are actually straight-up FRIGHTENING. So my fears are magnified and now I’m not crying, I’m balling my eyes out. Yay Halloween.

Many things have changed since we were little about Halloween, but the one thing that has not changed is the love I have for Halloween Disney movies. They will never get old and they’ll never disappoint.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
