A Guide to Sorority Recruitment: Jewelry Edition

Whether you’re a PNM (potential new member), or recruiting fabulous new ladies into your chapter, you are always going to be slightly nervous about how you look around new people. So, I thought I’d ease your worries a little and create a list of suggestions on what type of fun and flirty jewelry you can rock this recruitment season. Let me also just add a quick disclosure: sorority recruitment should not be about material things at all, but if you can bond with girls over what they're wearing, or start a story over a piece of jewelry that means something to them, that can lead to a lot of great discussions and connections throughout recruitment.

A Nice Watch: A nice watch (shown below) can either be helpful or hurtful during recruitment. For instance, a watch is great for seeing how much time you have left between rounds but also tempts the wearer to be looking at her watch during a round (a huge no no), so proceed with caution.

Stud Earrings: I’m not talking about those “free with purchase” studs you got from Claire’s when you got your ears pierced. I’m talking about the put together, “I’m in college now!” stud earrings. For recruitment, don’t be aggressive with hoops or chandelier earrings that will get stuck in your hair while you nervously…I mean leisurely play with it. So, stick to the basics and you’ll be good to go.

A Simple Necklace: Recruitment is aggressive enough, so your jewelry shouldn’t be. That means a simple necklace can be donned on your neck without distracting from your pretty face! Here’s a cute option from Kendra Scott!

Dainty Rings: During recruitment you don’t want anything you wear to be too noisy or too distracting, so clunky rings that might bang on a table or seat while you are trying to have a conversation might not be the best. I suggest you wear some dainty rings such as these two.

Or, if you want to channel your inner Olivia Pope to “handle” all that is recruitment, this ring set is Pope-esque and can be worn multiple ways #utility.

Personalized Jewelry: Everything about recruitment is personal, so why not personalize your jewelry? If you are on the recruiter side, this is a perfect time to represent your chapter in an oh-so-discreet way through repping your letters on bracelets, necklaces, rings, etc. Alex and Ani has an entire range of products dedicated to srats everywhere, so shop away! If you choose to rep your personal letters (initials), don’t fret! There are plenty of options from rings to necklaces for you as well. From bar pendants to disk rings, you are covered. However, the most important thing to remember is that personalized doesn’t have to mean a golden monogram, or your initials stamped into some metal. It can mean any jewelry that is personal to you. I think this is the key to recruitment jewelry, because you can start a conversation that has more meaning than just what store you bought your bangles from.

Start prepping for recruitment now with these jewelry selections, and you’ll have one less thing to worry about come August!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
