Being in college has truly taught me a lot. My friends, my goals, my ambitions, oh and one major thing; I am not made out of money. We have all been there, struggling with the $5 we have left in our bank account for the next week. The ramen noodle struggle is not a myth. I have especially struggled with the idea that now I am graduating, so what was once a poor college student is now a poor adult. Alright so let's not be dramatic; it can be easy to save money and put down the impulsive spending. This list can help cut corners and maybe make you some money in the end.
1. Automatic savings
Working a job and getting a direct deposit is great, however when that money is gone it's really gone. The best way to start saving money is setting up an automatic savings deposit with your bank. This way when you get paid, money automatically gets sent to a savings account and is out of sight and out of mind. It stops the temptation of touching that money and through time accumulates.
2. Clothing detox
I have clothes from years ago that still have tags on them. I am horrible with parting wth my wardrobe, however, I found a new incentive; getting paid for the clothes you don't wear. Apps like Poshmark make it easy to set up your own closet and sell items you don't wear anymore or have never touched. You can also buy clothes for a discount price from other's closets.
3. Buy what you need
Set down the sequin pants and/or fur vest that is trendy right now. I always see clothes when I shop that I just want to grab and buy, but most of the time I never wear them. Only buy basic needs and switch them up to make new outfits and looks. I stick with neutrals a lot and once in a while I will splurge on a colored piece to add pop to an outfit. Don't buy all of this season's trends because next season they will just sit there.
4. Eat at home
I am notorious for grabbing food while I'm out. I hate preparing food at home or grocery shopping. The convenience of just grabbing something on the go or going out to dinner with friends is 100% more convenient. However, on a budget, going out to eat adds up. Go grocery shopping and get some basic meal prep items. You can even Pinterest some basic meal prep items and easy meals to make with them. This way you can use the food during the week and make tons of different meals. You can also suggest to friends to have a dinner in. If you host a taco night and have each friend bring $5 for ingredients each of you are spending only that $5 rather than $50 for a restaurant dinner.
Overall, being on a budget and in college can be tricky. Even out of college, being on a budget has its obstacles, but with the right habits you can still have fun without going broke. Saving money now can help you live a fine life of luxury down the road!
