Becoming An Adult As Told By "The Office"

Over the last two months, I have found transitioning into a grown up to be the most stressful, yet hilarious thing I have ever experienced. I would say it’s the emotional equivalent of flying on a plane alone for the first time as a kid — your new found independence fosters overwhelming pride, but the idea that you may potentially mess up or become lost can induce feelings of sheer panic. Fear not, society, for I am slowly but surely adjusting to “adulting!” Here are a few of the many new thoughts and actions accompanied with my maturity evolution.

1. Looking for the cheapest gas station is actually a thing.

Why would I pay more if I don’t have to?

2. Email is a legitimate form of communication.

This also means using complete sentences, correct grammar, and no emojis. #Boring

3. Politics become important.

As a first time voter, there are undeniably some anxieties accompanied with this subject.

4. Coupons are the shizzz.

There’s nothing wrong with ballin’ on a budget.

5. If it isn’t on the calendar, it won’t be remembered.

And quite frankly, even if it is, there’s no guarantee it will get done. There are physically not enough hours in a day.

6. Having a grilled cheese for breakfast because procrastinating grocery shopping is only natural.

Just me? Okay, moving on.

7. Checking your mailbox is no longer exciting; it means someone wants money.

Ugh…

8. Bathing suite tops function as a bra because doing laundry sucks.

No shame.

9. Visiting with the grandparents becomes routine.

They are the best listeners and have, by far, the most wisdom. They're basically your biggest fans too.

10. I frequently ask myself “What would Mom do?”

And when I have no clue, I call her and ask.

11. Then, I hang up, and it dawns on me that I just conversed with my future self.

I have whole-heartedly accepted that I’m ultimately turning into my mother — but this does, in fact, give me hope that I’m doing something right!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
