Growing Up With Older Brothers

...And why they're my favorite people.

Growing Up With Older Brothers

When people find out that I grew up with three older brothers their first response was always, “I feel so bad for you.” Well, the truth is, if you don’t have older brothers then, I feel bad for you. In my family, growing up with my brothers I wasn’t just the ‘baby’ of the family, I was also the only girl. My brothers have taught me some of the most important lessons in life but in a way, only girls with brothers would understand.

1. They know how to treat girls, and I know how a girl should be treated.

Growing up I watched my brothers date girls, and now one is married and another is engaged. Watching them go through this, I have to say; my brothers know how to treat a girl right. Growing up with a little sister they always had to set good examples and be on their best behavior. Now, they treat the women in their lives the same way, with love and respect. But on the flip side, I got a really good understanding of how a guy should treat a woman. Not going to lie, they set the stakes pretty high. They taught me to always have high standards, to value who I am and what I believe.

2. How to be tough

Due to getting pushed, pulled, hit with flying footballs and or hockey pucks more than the usual, this taught me how to take a hit. Not only being physically tough but mentally tough. They taught me to stick up for myself and to not let people walk all over me. Because only my brothers can mess with me, right?

3. How to do what I love

Before my brothers even started college, they knew exactly what they wanted to study. We were always encouraged to pursue things we had a passion for. As I am beginning my college career, they have all finished school and began in the “real world.” I get to witness them do what they love every day. Now I can truly say I’m the proud little sister of an electrical engineer, nurse, and electrician. They have shown me how hard work and dedication to something you love can be accomplished. It so hard to figure out what you want to do with your life especially at such a young age, but in reality, it’s simple. Follow what you love and enjoy, because in the long run your dream will be fulfilled.

4. I have three best friends forever

Even though we don’t always see eye to eye on some things, for example, the toilet seat being left up. Or when you try to get revenge by unplugging their unsaved video game and running away like you’re going to die. But besides all of this, there is no one else who understands me better than my brothers do. We grew up in the same house together and we will stick by each other through everything, good and bad. I know they will always be there for me. Because I have three brothers I will have three best friends forever.

My brothers contributed to the person I am today. I have looked up to them my whole life, literally, the tallest one being 6’6”. I’ve learned from their mistakes, and I know that they will always be there to guide and encourage me. Through thick and thin I know we will always get through it together. I don’t know who I would be without my older brothers.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
