Growing Up With Grandma

It's funny how the young and the old bond so beautifully together.

Growing Up With Grandma

Most all of us have parents who work full-time jobs and this was a difficult situation growing up. We all know that if they could have, they just wouldn't have gone to work. They would have stayed home with us, rewound our favorite "Barney" movie over twenty times, fixed our favorite snacks, and rocked us to sleep after we were tuckered out from singing and dancing to "Mister Sun" so many times. Unfortunately, they couldn't do that, except for on the weekends, holidays, and the occasional off-day. I was lucky; I didn't have to go to a daycare every day with a bunch of cootie-covered kids. I got to go to Grandma's house. Spending most of my childhood with her taught me so much about life and the way it works. I never knew that spending my sweet, innocent days with a little old woman would impact me so greatly. Growing up with Grandma shaped me into the woman that I am today.

Granny is someone that I can always have fun with. She showed me how to play as she did when she was a little girl. Some of the games out on the shelves for children do nothing but stress their little minds out because of the "you must win or else" objectives. Those weren't the type of games that Granny taught me how to play. You played for enjoyment and for pleasure. Sometimes simplicity is the best for a child because it lets them use their own imaginations. Creativity flourished within me because of this.

Granny has taught me to appreciate the older generation. She always has a story to share, and at eighty years old, a memory is everything. I could picture the roads she walked and the hard times she went through on her own. I could hear the laughter she voiced back on a summer's day in the 1950s as she giggles at the remembrance of a funny incident. I began to think about how she was my age once and how I will be in her shoes one day. The more stories I heard from her, the more I saw how she came to own the wisdom and contentment that she possesses. I admire the silver hairs upon her head; they don't just represent her old age anymore, they represent the mistakes she made and fixed. That's the beauty of life. That's the kind of things she looks back on and smiles at.

There are Memaws, Nana's, Mawmaws, and I have a Granny. There are so many different names that can be used as a replacement for Grandmother, but they all have the same meaning behind them. A grandmother is someone who is always there, and she usually has your favorite cookies around for support, too. I am so thankful to say that I have grown up with my grandmother. That may sound odd, but there's no better soul to spend a childhood with. It's funny how the young and the old bond so beautifully together.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
