“It’s a television show, they say. You shouldn’t be so invested, they say.”
No matter how strong we try to be through an episode of "Grey’s Anatomy", we always end up the same way -- with a pint of ice cream in our lap, an entire box of tissues gone, and cursing at the television screen for all the pain Shonda Rhimes has once again caused us. From mistresses to plane crashes, there is never a moment that we don’t feel entirely invested, and no matter how much we try to remind ourselves that this isn’t real life, that Patrick Dempsey really isn’t actually a McDreamy neurosurgeon that could save us from even the most inoperable brain tumors, it just feels impossible.
Although every episode leaves us in turmoil, there are those memorable moments and characters that still haunt our dreams and have changed us forever.
The Plane Crash: ft. Mark and Lexi’s deaths
The two hardest deaths for most Grey’s Anatomy fans; not only was it hard to watch the two most charismatic characters slowly be ripped from our hearts in the matter of three episodes, but we also experienced the end of the power couple of the century in a matter of minutes. Some can never again watch these episodes because really, who wants to have to go through ALL that again? Once was bad enough right!?
The End to 007
No matter how much some of us despised George after all the pain he single handedly caused Callie Torres (yes, this may be a bit of my biasness coming out), the realization of the “bus hero” being George O’Malley had us all screaming, “It’s George!” as he shakily wrote 007 on Meredith’s palms. And watching the pain that came afterwards for every one of our beloved characters, was unbearable.
Everyone we love, DIES!
I can’t even count the times on my hands that I have become emotionally invested in a patient or doctor that has just ended up dying. Sometimes I even catch myself subconsciously forcing myself to not like a character, in hopes that that MIGHT be their saving grace to live to see another season!
By now you may have brought out the tissues, thrown on a Grey’s episode on Netflix, and are beginning to relive all the times we have personally been victimized by Shonda Rhimes, because let’s face it -- we have and will be until the end of time (or until Grey’s goes off the air and Netflix!)
