In the past couple of months, I have watched every single season of Grey’s Anatomy. Saying that the show has changed me is an understatement. The creator, Shonda Rhimes, proves herself show after show, but this specific series will always be my favorite. She has a certain little recipe she likes to mix up with her work and in this specific case, it's political correctness. People have always thought this way, but in my years, I've never seen a television series be this forward with it. She does a great job with using her platform to educate her audiences on serious topics that usually result in backlash and ignorance.
The cast is very colorful. By this, I mean there's people of different races, backgrounds, mental issues, sexualities. It isn't your average "cookie-cutter" white heterosexual narrative. It was written to change. Characters that have really stuck with me, probably because it relates so much to my life, are ones like Callie Torres (played by Sara Ramirez), and Arizona Robbins (played by Jessica Capshaw). For several seasons, these two prove to be my favorite lesbian television show couple. Why I think they are so important is because I feel as if I can finally relate to someone in the media. And I'm sure I'm not alone.
Throughout the show, different things like racist husbands, transphobic parents, and a lot of homophobia are consistently thrown at the employees of Seattle Grace Hospital. And I know Shonda Rhimes didn't just put these in here for convenience, she's choosing to shed light on these realistic subjects. Grey's Anatomy remains to be one of the most progressive and unproblematic television shows in the past ten years, and I'm hoping Shonda has a couple more up her sleeve for us.
