Anyone who knows even a little bit about the wonderful world that is ShondaLand knows that their favorite character(s) are going to die. There is no argument about it. Shonda Rhimes takes joy in getting people emotionally attached to a character, then violently ripping them from our hearts. In Grey's Anatomy, there are many casualties. It is not a true Grey's Anatomy episode unless some patient we really like dies. There are the obvious ones like Mark Sloan, Lexi Grey, and of course McDreamy himself (Derek Shepard). There are also the not so well-known ones like Mary Portman, Liz Fallon, and Susan Grey. Every character that has died has played an important role in the story. Some hung around longer than others, but each and every one of them affected our beloved main characters in some way, shape, or form. Here are 8 patients that the doctors of Seattle Grace Mercy Death have treated, and unfortunately, lost.
1. Mary Portman
Mary Portman survived the mass murders of Gary Clark only to die of an unknown complication after her colostomy reversal. It's a shame that someone who was able to live through Gary Clark's rampage couldn't even survive a routine procedure. Dr. Bailey took this loss very personal as she was trapped with Mary during the shooting. Thanks, Shonda, Thanks
2. Frankie McNeal
Frankie McNeal was the one of the three kids in her family to develop cardiomyopathy. Both her brother and her sister were diagnosed with the same disease. Dr. Yang tried her hardest to keep her alive using an artificial heart, but the strain was too much and she passed away after the donor heart she was supposed to receive went to her sister Ivy instead. This loss hit everyone hard as this family was well-known and loved around the hospital.
3. Craig Thomas
Even though he seemed like a crazy old guy the first time we met him, he turned out to be a decent surgeon. Even though some of his techniques were old school, he was still able to get the job done. He became Christina's Meredith during her time spent at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. It all came tumbling down quickly when he collapsed and died during a surgery due to a heart attack.
4. Susan Grey
The Hiccups. Such a simple thing. People get them every day, multiple times in their life. Somehow, when Susan Grey got them, it killed her, not only leaving behind Lexie and Molly but Meredith too, whom she had become like a second mother to.
5. Liz Fallon
Liz Fallon was Ellis Grey's scrub nurse. She spent more time with Ellis Grey than Meredith Grey did. When she was admitted to the hospital with pancreatic cancer, Dr. Yang thought she was going to get to perform a Whipple. Liz's cancer and pancreas were too far gone in order to do anything. This was one of the first patients Christina actually connected with on an emotional level, so it was hard for her to let go.
6. Really Old Guy
Really Old Guy, or Charlie Yost, was a great friend to our favorite group of interns. He was in a semi-comatose state, which allowed the interns a quiet room to eat lunch and gossip. One day he just woke up. He didn't know what he was going to do with his life since he had been in a coma for so long. Just as he was about be discharged, he passed away peacefully in his wheelchair.
7.Samuel Norbert Avery
Samuel Avery was diagnosed with type II osteogenesis imperfecta while still in utero. Jackson and April decided to have April induced so that they could hold their son while he struggled with the few minutes of life he was given. Though he was only here for a few hours, all of our hearts still broke when he died and left April and Jackson to try and figure out a way to heal.
8. Henry Burton
Henry Burton came to us as a patient that had a multitude of problems. He married Teddy on a whim when they discovered that would get him the medical insurance he needed to get his surgeries. When he died on Christian Yang's table, our hearts broke for Teddy.
