College is a flurry of looming stressors, academic deadlines, friendly social obligations and athletic triumphs. For a regular individual tackling this list of demanding priorities can seem overwhelming. Nothing is impossible with "your person", a phrase coined by Grey's Anatomy Meredith Grey and Christina Yang. They refer to each other as "my person" because their bond is stronger than just a friendship. These two strong and very determined women are inherently different when it comes to their personalities and priorities, yet they support and advocate for each other in any situation. Their loyalty comes before any judgements. This is part of the reason they have survived the many trials and tribulations portrayed on Grey's Anatomy. Even though the surgeries might be fake the "my person" concept is very real.
"My person" is my aunt. Our relationship can not just be defined as niece and aunt or justified as best friends. A strong support system is the sturdy foundation of our relationship. This past year my family experienced a death in the family. While I was grieving over the loss of my Grandpop I also had to console my aunt as a daughter saying goodbye to her father. This was a challenge neither one of us were prepared for, but tackled together. Not long after, my aunt experienced a different type of anguish as her marriage ended in divorce. Again, we found ourselves in uncharted territory. As just a teenager I was worried I would not be able to help her through this different type of loss or be able to advise her through these relationship problems. So I did what I knew how to do, listen. This created a safe environment and opportunity for my Aunt Jackie to talk through her dilemmas without fear of judgment. Not only did I just comfort my aunt, but she did the same. I feel secure going to her, explaining the chronicles of a teenage girl.
Many do not understand our relationship so it's fitting to use "my person" to describe the bond. I value the wisdom of someone who already survived their teenage years, and enjoy the time I get to spend with my aunt. Despite the number of years between us, I am grateful for the countless memories I have with "my person."
